The digital controller is the heart of the system, monitoring the temperature on both the collector and the hot-water tank. The controller is capable of heating the tank by running the pump, stopping the pump or even variably controlling the speed of the pump. This in turn will control the rate in which the fluid pass by the collectors.
(example)The faster the fluid passes by the collectors the hotter it will be come on the other side, the slower the fluid passed the collector the colder it will be on the other side.
This is why a system that is digitally controlled is far superior to systems that are "analog" Some designs the solar heating market place design domestic and commercial systems with no controller. this done by installing a solar pump to replace the digital controls.

Examples 1 & 2 are seasonal Solar thermal collectors and need to be drained at the end of the fall. Example #2can utilize a heating element to extend the season to -5.
Example 3 & 4 utilize the internal heat exchanger. The "all year" systems do not have fluid going in the the tubes, like the HPC 200 prevent freezing they rely the heat pipe. (like below)
